Helpful Lisbon Tips:

Foods to try:

  • Pastel de Nata — This iconic Portuguese custard tart is a sweet treat that can be found at bakeries and cafes throughout the city.
  • Bacalhau — Salt cod is a staple in Portuguese cuisine, and Lisbon offers various bacalhau-based dishes, such as Bacalhau à Brás (cod with shredded potatoes, eggs, and onions).
  • Port Wine — A fortified Portuguese wine, typically a sweet red wine, known for its strong, often alcoholic flavor. It’s produced in the Douro Valley and is enjoyed in Lisbon both as a dessert wine and as an aperitif

Currency: Portugal uses the Euro. While credit cards are widely accepted, it’s a good idea to have some cash on hand, especially for smaller establishments or markets. ATMs are readily available.

Language: Portuguese is the official language. While English is spoken in tourist areas, learning a few basic Portuguese phrases (“Olá” – Hello, “Obrigado/Obrigada” – Thank you (male/female), “Por favor” – Please) can be appreciated.

Time Zone: Lisbon is in the Western European Summer Time (WEST) zone, which is GMT/UTC +1.

Lisbon Card: If you plan to use public transport frequently and visit many attractions, consider purchasing a Lisboa card. It offers unlimited travel on public transport and free or discounted entry to numerous sights. You can often purchase this at the airport.

Stay Connected: Check with your mobile provider about international roaming charges. You might want to consider purchasing a local SIM card or using Wi-Fi, which is available at the airport and hotel.

Safety: Be mindful of your belongings, especially in crowded areas like public transport and viewpoints (Miradouros). It’s advisable to keep backpacks in front of you.

Be Prepared for Hills: Lisbon is a very hilly city with cobblestone streets. Wear comfortable and sturdy walking shoes!
